Lead Poisoning

CLPPP educates the community about lead poisoning and exposure to lead. Our services help more children to get tested for lead poisoning.

There is no safe level of lead in the blood.

Lead poisoning happens when lead builds up in the body. Even small amounts of lead in a child’s body can make it hard for your child to learn and pay attention. Lead poisoning can cause long-term health problems. High amounts of lead can damage the brain, kidneys, and other organs. Lead is dangerous for everyone, but especially for children under 6 years old. Most children who have lead poisoning do not look or act sick.

Medi-Cal, CHDP Well-Child exams, and most health insurance plans cover blood lead tests. Ask your provider about testing your child. Tests are done with a finger prick (capillary), or a blood draw (venous).
All children should be tested at 12 and 24 months old.
