2007-10 Program Objectives

The Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency staffs the Santa Cruz County Tobacco Education Coalition, an advocacy group that promotes a tobacco-free lifestyle and environment. The Coalition was formed in 1985 and is currently funded  by Proposition 99, the sales tax on cigarettes. The Coalition consists of community organizations as well as concerned grandparents, ex-smokers, and people who have lost a loved one to smoking.

Coalition accomplishments include:

  • Maintaining compliance with smoke-free workplace laws;

  • Working with local law enforcement to create smoke-free jail facilities;

  • Advocating for smoke-free beaches and parks in Santa Cruz and Capitola;

  • Educating community agencies about adopting tobacco-free donation/sponsorship policies;

  • Encouraging apartment residents and managers to create smoke-free living areas;

  • Collaborating with local Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) agencies to create smoke-free event policies.
