STD Prevention for Youth and Young Adults

What are STDs?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are illnesses that are easily spread through sexual or intimate physical contact. If you have sex with someone who has an STD, you can get it too. Many people who have an STD don't know it. They may look healthy, but they still could have an STD. Some people won't tell you, even if they know.

Who gets STDs?
Of all the reported STD's in CA: 29% are among 15-19 year olds and 74% are among 15-24 year olds. While teens and young adults have the highest rates, STDs are equal opportunity diseases affecting adults of all ages, races, and cultures. The Truth About STDs (PDF fact sheet)

Common types of STDs
STDs are caused by bacteria, viruses, or protozoa. The 5 most common STD's in the U.S. (and in California) are Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Trichomonas, Chlamydia, and Hepatitis B. HPV, HSV, and Trichomoniasis are very common and are non-reportable, meaning it is not mandated by law to be reported to the health department (County and State).

One might have an STD without noticing any symptoms or signs. Symptoms may not appear for several weeks or months after sexual contact. If untreated, many STDs cause serious health problems, infertility, impotency, immune deficiency, mental retardation, and death.
