Alcohol and drug abuse services are provided for Santa Cruz County residents through prevention, intervention and treatment services. The Alcohol and Drug Program treatment and early intervention objectives include reduction of alcohol and other drug abuse and criminality while increasing employment, educational achievement and health. In addition to the programs listed below, the Alcohol and Drug Program Administration also provides support and monitoring of contract prevention and treatment services county wide.

  • Educational Materials:

    • Video Library: The video library contains approximately 90 videos and is being upgraded on a monthly basis. Videos can be signed out for various periods of time depending on the need. Please review the list provided and contact the Prevention Coordinator at 454-5003 to arrange a time to check out a video.

    • If you would like printed substance abuse materials call 454-5003. Any agency or organization needing large quantities of printed materials (more then 10) should contact one of the following organizations:
      • National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information provides books, reports, pamphlets, newsletters, posters, videos, etc. in both English and Spanish. Nearly all items are available free of charge and can either be ordered online or through the Publications Catalog which is also free of charge.
      • California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs also provides books, reports, newsletters, posters, videos in both English and Spanish through The Resource Center. Nearly all items are free of charge and are often similar to those available through the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information website.

NOTE:
California law now adds requirements to multiple offender clients who fail the program for other than failure to pay the program fee. If you fail to complete a court-ordered multiple offense program for reasons such as excessive absences or failure to maintain contact with the program, the additional requirements are applied.

The Youth Services Caseworker housed in Juvenile Hall provides assessment, substance abuse counseling, AOD education and treatment recommendations to juveniles referred by County Probation.

CalWORKs case managers interview and assess HRA Welfare-to-Work referrals for substance abuse issues. They make referrals for treatment as needed and follow-up and assist with any barriers to treatment.

Friday Night Live LogoSanta Cruz County Friday Night Live Partnership is comprised of the Friday Night Live (FNL) and Club Live (CL) programs. These programs are multi-cultural, youth driven and lead, designed to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug use among middle school and high school students. 

"Friday Night Live builds partnerships for positive and healthy youth development which engage youth as active leaders and resources in their community."

  • Organizes student conferences addressing alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues.

Drug Court

Drug Court is a collaboration between the County of Santa Cruz Superior Court, Health Services Agency’s Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services division, the Probation Department, and the Alto Counseling Center. Also involved are the District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and the Public Defender’s Office. 

Through close coordination of treatment services and the criminal justice system, Drug Treatment Court clients are ensured quick access to treatment and receive immediate feedback and consequences for both positive and negative behaviors as they work toward recovery. 

Alcohol and other drug education, group and individual counseling, employment counseling and case management services are provided to court referred clients for a minimum of one year. Dismissal of primary criminal drug cases act as an incentive for successful program completion. By working together we are realizing better outcomes with less recidivism than traditional approaches.
